Spelling in Finnish : the case of the double consonant

2021

Because of its regularity, it is relatively easy to learn to read and spell in Finnish. However, a specific hurdle in spelling acquisition seems to be the doubling of consonant letters. In this study on consonant letter doubling spelling in Finnish children (91 Grade 1 and 191 Grade 2 children), we asked two questions. First, are items with double consonant letters (e.g., “kissa” [ˈkisːɑ] ‘cat’) indeed harder to spell than single consonant items (e.g., “kisa” [ˈkisɑ] ‘contest’)? Second, is consonant doubling harder for stop consonants (e.g., “takki” [ˈtɑkːi] ‘coat’) than for continuant consonants (e.g., “kissa&rdq…

Modality and Uncertainty in Data Visualizations: A Corpus Approach to the Use of Connecting Lines

2020

In data visualizations, connecting lines may have various semiotic functions, including the semiotic potential of indicating modality and uncertainty. The goal of this article is to find out how this semiotic potential is realized in current best practices of data visualizations and what conventions exist for the visual manifestations of these functions. This issue is addressed by using a corpus-based approach and a two-level analysis method within a social semiotic framework. First, the article offers a theoretical discussion on how the concepts of modality and uncertainty interrelate. Second, a method for investigating how these concepts are visualized at different levels is presented. Th…

Evidentials, politeness and prosody in Spanish: A corpus analysis

2014

This paper analyzes three Spanish particles, namely al parecer, por lo visto and según parece, whose status as pure evidentials (i.e., elements that only convey"source of information") has been put into question. The aim of this study is twofold: firstly, to observe the incidence of prosody in triggering the contextual meanings usually expressed by evidentials, i.e., politeness, impoliteness and self-image activities; secondly, to find out whether their prosodic behaviour provides any hint of their core meaning being"source of information". In order to carry out this analysis, a corpus of circa three million words of Peninsular Spanish has been compiled, which aims to reflect a variety of r…

Use and Translation of Demonstratives in Fiction: A Contrastive Approach (English-Catalan)

2013

Demonstratives are usually described as prototypical situational space deictics, but corpus analysis shows that situational deixis is not the most frequent function that they perform. This article shows the complexity of the use of demonstratives and the effects of such complexity on translation by analyzing some English examples and their translation into Catalan in two novels. Specifically, the English demonstratives this/these/that/those and their Catalan counterparts have been identified as a first step of the analysis. Secondly, their use has been analyzed taking into account the differences of the two deictic systems and other relevant variables. Finally, the general strategies activa…

Amerikāņu angļu valodas lietvārdu lietojums citu angļu valodas variantu tekstos

2019

Towards a Cross-linguistic Study of Phraseology across Specialized Genres

2019

This poster paper aims to present an early-stage work of a group of researchers collaborating within the project EMPHRASE. The corpus-based cross-linguistic studies of a specialised phraseology across different linguistic registers, genres and domains of language use have not received sufficient attention yet (Buendía 2013, Aguado 2007, Ramisch 2015, Grabowski 2018), notably in terms of turning the results of largely descriptive studies into actionable knowledge. The project revolves around three main axes: 1) compiling and structuring an inventory of word combinations from different genres, disciplines and languages; 2) exploring and analysing cross-genre characteristics as well as typical…

Corpus analysis of phraseology in an A1 level textbook of German as a foreign language

2018

This paper aims to analyse the extent to which the textbook for German as a foreign language DaF kompakt A1 (Sander et al., 2011) complies with the recommendations of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (Council of Europe, 2001) (hereafter CEFR) in respect to lexical competence and sociolinguistic competence in receptive and productive activities, specifically with regard to phraseological units. In this respect, we have focused on sentential formulae and fixed frames present in a corpus containing the textbook materials, and we have checked whether those fixed expressions correspond to the phraseological and sociolinguistic compe-tences that are expected in the Framewo…

Evidencialidad, conocimientos compartidos y atenuación: El caso de ‘[o] eso dicen’

2020

This paper focuses on analyzing the meaning and pragmatic functions of construction [o] eso dicen (‘[or] so they say’), as well as observing the discursive patterns in which it appears. The departure point is the consideration that this construction conveys indirect evidential meanings of different degrees of accessibility or intersubjectivity (reportative and folklore), and therefore its use could be related to the function of pragmatic attenuation activated by the displacement of the origin of the enunciation. In the empirical part of this work, we analyze 65 examples recovered in the analysis of five oral and one written corpus. The results of the study indicate that most of the uses of …

ALL OR NOTHING: A SEMANTIC ANALYSIS OF HYPERBOLE

2009

This paper focuses on hyperbole, a long neglected form of non-literal language despite its pervasiveness<br />in everyday speech. It addresses the production process of exaggeration, since a crucial limitation in<br />figurative language theories is the production and usage of figures of speech, probably due to the intensive<br />research effort on their comprehension. The aim is to analyse hyperbole from a semantic perspective in order<br />to devise a semasiological taxonomy which enables us to understand the nature and uses of the trope. In<br />order to analyse and classify hyperbolic items a corpus of naturally occurring conversations extracted from<br …
